Challenges for the Naval Ship Design Community

Part of The Columbia Group-ASNE Seminar Series given by VADM Paul Sullivan on July 17, 2012. The problems generated by the simultaneous execution of so many lead ships has exposed weakness in the way the U.S. designs and constructs warships. This presentation argues that the ship design community must incorporate lessons learned from these “growing pains,”  apply new disciplines, and utilize the current body of knowledge on the next family of ships.

Lessons Learned from a Career in Ship Design
This presentation, part of The Columbia Group-ASNE Seminar Series, was given by Peter A. Gale on April 23, 2009. He spoke about a few of the most important lessons he has learned during his 49 years of experience designing and reviewing the designs of (primarily) naval ships. From the perspective of a person who has design experience in and out of NAVSEA, in a variety of circumstances and for a variety of ship types, he argued that highly successful U.S. naval ship designs are still achievable provided that certain lessons are taken to heart.
